The foundations of the Hagana

In September, 1920, the organization's basic values were drafted, and its constitution was formulated during the first few years. As the organization grew and was suborned to the Jewish institutions and the Zionist movement, it became necessary to redraft the constitution. The need for setting organization principles and values grew once Irgun Bet split from the Hagana. As a result Shaul Me'erov Avigur started revising the constitution in 1934. The final draft of the constitution was finally approved in 1941. During this period of time, the Hagana grew, established a National Command, and acquired significant military experience during the Arab riots of 1920-1921. National Command members Israel Galilee and Shaul Me'erov consulted with leaders and intellectuals, before drafting the final version of the Hagana Codex.

The Hagana insignia
Moshe Bar- Tiqwa- Mundek Pasternack first drew the insignia of the entwined sword & olive leaf on the wall of the Platoon commander training course headquarters, while serving as commander of the course in 1941.
It became the graduates' insignia, and later on, became the Hagana insignia.
The Platoon commander graduate pin was first introduced in a graduation ceremony held in Gymnasia Herzliya in the presence of Hagana Chief of Staff, Ya'acov Dori and head of National Command Moshe Sneh.
When the General Staff National Command was moved to the Red House (Hagana headquarters in Tel-Aviv and in 1948 Palmach headquarters as well), the insignia was stamped on the access permits of those authorized to access 'the red house'.
To this day the same pin is awarded to officer course graduate.
Corps & H.Q. insignias, rank insignias and decoration of merit insignias, all portray the Hagana entwined sword & olive branches.
