The Illegal Immigration and Navy Museum was founded in 1969 and is under constant development to this day. The museum deals with two complimentary topics: Illegal immigration exhibition and Israeli Navy exhibition.
An original Illegal Immigration ship is incorporated into the architecture of the building. The museum exhibits serve as an educational framework that deals with Jewish Nation's struggle for its right to immigrate to the pre-state Israel, and founding, operating and developing the Israeli Navy to this day.
The main exhibit in the museum is the Illegal Immigration ship, which brought 434 immigrants to Israel in September 1947. It was originally a tank landing craft in the Allies' navy during World War II.
The ship served as a tank landing aircraft in the newly established navy during the War of Independence. The exhibition includes many original and reconstructed exhibits such as Illegal Immigration and war ship models, weapons, maps, documents, photos, films and audio-visual kits base don the original period photos. The main exhibit in the navy section is the first navy torpedo boat, Achi 'Mivtach.' The museum will soon feature the 'Dakar' submarine bridge that was pulled out of the water and kept at the navy docks in Haifa.
A new section opened in 1988, which tells the history of the battle and Illegal Immigration as well as the deportation camps in Cypress. The museum exhibits were donated by immigrants, institutions, the Navy and its veterans. The museum staff guides pupils in writing annual projects on exhibition-related topics. The museum is part of the museum unit of the Defense Office.
