Kibbutz Ramat Rachel, in southern Jerusalem, suffered Arab attacks in the 1929 and 1936-39 riots. During the War of Independence it was an important post in the area, overlooking the Bet Lechem - Jerusalem road. Difficult battles with Egyptian and Jordanian forces took place there.
